Like anything there is a right way and wrong way. Vertical rib steel as been around for over 100 years. The industry started out using lead washered nails in the highs but sheets were typically not longer than 8'. Today there are a wide variety of panels and each use is differant. Unfortunately some go a a retail yard and buy a generic panel and install it incorrectly. The research is very easy. Choose a product and contact the manufacturer to get their recommendations and ask to see their product approval report which will clearly indicate that it has been tested and approved to the building code and how to install it. If the product does not have one then choose another manufacturer. Second once you choose a proper product choose a proper contractor by asking for 3 simimilar referances and call/vixit and check them out. Seldom do we here of any problems when they follow this process.

Steel expansion and contraction is not huge but there is some as determined by the exact steel. Its is unavoidable. This will exert some pressure on "through" fasteners.

The roofer I am interested in due to his
estimate for a galvalume painted roof tells
me that he does not see the beneit of the
underlayment. This metal is going over
shingles.

I feel that underlayment is required by code even over old shingles. I also like the fact that it prevents the back of the metal from rubbing against the old shingles

How do I install a metal roof (new construction)? I'm specifically
concerned with what I put over the underlayment and under the metal
sheets, and also what I use to seal the metal sheets together where
they overlap (silicone?).
