ridge vent

I have a steel roof with a ridge vent that was installed about two years ago. We now have leaves getting into the attic. Have not had any water to enter that we know of. How can we stop the leaves from blowing under the ridge vent?

It sounds to me like you need some sort of vented closure strip or other flashing as an integral part of the ridge vent. Can you contact the manufacturer of the roofing for their detail on what the ridge vent should be like?

I have a similar problem only I am getting snow blowing in. When the weather warms it then melts and, well you know the rest. The phone # I have and the email address I have for the seller of the product are not responsive so I think they are gone. Any suggestions? I am in southern NH so I can't tell it not to snow!

Jim, any chance you can send me some close-up photos of the ridge as it now stands, or at least a good detailed description? Is this the first winter for this roof? If not, have you had problems before? Do you know who installed the roof? My email is [email protected]

My mother-in-law just had a metal roof installed and she was wondering if it's normal to have a lot of noise (sounding like a frieght train) when the wind is blowing. It howls she said. She is also wondering how wide the slot should be that is cut for the ridge vent in the roof. Thank you. My email is [email protected]

Typically, the ridge hole will be 3 - 5 " wide. It would be very unusual to have a lot of wind noise. I would suggest contacting the manufacturer of the roofing and asking for their input. Todd Miller

I appreciate your feedback. I will let her know. She has contacted the ones who installed it and they checked it..told her that it had all the screws that were needed in it..and was basically made fun of. The one man said: "Well if you hear any more noise call the police". grrrrr lol

I have a question, as to the ridge vent on a metal roof. I live in Florida, and had a metal roof installed after the hurricanes because of water damage in 2004. In 2006 we had some wind driven rain come in the ridge vent to the attic. This happened about 5 times so I called the rooing company and they came out and sealed over the ridge vent. Now, I wonder if this was the correct answer, as I have noticed my electric bill over this past summer to be very high. Any advice??? Beverly

Improperly designed and/or installed ridge vents tend to leak during rainstorms with high winds. To prevent this, you need a ridge vent that either has a filter to keep out blowing rain (or snow) or a built-in trim that will channel rain that blows through, back outside onto the roof. Florida Solar Energy Center (fsec.com) recommends having a sealed attic space in Florida to conserve enrgy and to prevent mold. The openings allow heat and humidity to enter during the late afternoon, when the air conditioner is running the most. It is a very good website!

This is a very different sort of construction method called "hot roof theory". It works but does require more od an investment than just ventilation. Also, it is not always the easiest thing to do to an existing home -- it is easier with new construction. Todd Miller

I am in the middle of new construction and the metal roof installed.  I can see a thin line of daylight from the attic and got a puddle of water during our first blowing coastal rain.Other than the ridge vent, there isn't anything else installed.  I was told that a v-vent should be installed.  Any info???

Many ridge vents are single piece systems-- nothing else needed. I do not know what you have. The ridge vent will not fully function until the house is completed and soffit vents feed air to it. It is possible the ventilation is not working properly now so water was sucked into the vent. Todd Miller

we just had a metal roof put on this summer. We are experiencing very hight winds and are also hearing the loud sounds (light a freight train) My husband seems to think that something isn't right with the roof. I thought it was the wind blowing through the ridge vent also. I called the company and they say they have never had anyone have a problem like this. What company put your mom's roof on. Ours was the "Custom Metal Roofs LLC. They have offices in Alabama and Florida
