I have a pyramidal hip roof which is sheathed with 1 x 10 boards. The interior of the building is open to the peak and I would like it to remain that way. I would like to install some type of vertical panel metal roofing but I want to insulate first with 1 inch ridged foam insulation on top of the 1 x10 boards. Should I strip the roof with 2 x 4's the flat way? This would allow for a 1/2 inch air space between the foam and the roofing. Also what type ridged insulation is recommended, ie vapor barrier on 1 side or both sides?

Assuming this is a home then you must ventilate it by code and have a minimum 1" air space over the insulation. Choose a type of roofing from one of our manufacturers and contact them for their recommendations. The code is clear that you need an interior air barrier and a moisture barrier under the roof covering
