Roof Pitch for Snow Country

My gable roof has a pitch of 2-1/2 in 12 and two layers of asphalt shingles. I am thinking of removing the two layers of shingles and installing trusses on the present roof deck to increase the roof pitch so that snow would slide off a metal roof. The total snowfall last winter was over 250 inches. Does this seem workable and, if so, what minimum or "best" roof pitch would you recommend? Thank you in advance.

This is a qestion best answered locally as it does involve meeting local building codes in regards to loading and fire etc. I would suggest taking photos and a plan with dimensions to the local building department and get their recommendations first. As to the pitch the steeper the slope, the more are you have to roof and so the cost goes up. On the other side of the coin, the steeper the slope the longer the roofing materials last. I personally would suggest a minimum of 8/12 or better with this type of loading.
