is it okay to put a metal roof on top of an existing 1 layer shingled roof? or will it be too heavy?

Metal roofing is very low weight -- ranging from about 45 pounds per square for aluminum to 85 - 145 for steel. Asphalt shingles, on the other hand, weigh from 275 - 425. Most building codes allow for two layers of roofing but you should double check yours. Metal is frequently used as a second layer. many of the residential products are designed specifically for re-roofing.
