I am in search of some answers concerning metal roofing. 1. When termed Aluminum, is aluminum the material or is it just steel (plated or dipped with aluminum coating)? If it is aluminum is it painted or powder coated? 2. Is galvanized roofing painted? 3. Looking at a home with a metal roof, is there a way to tell aluminum (if question one is yes) from galvanized steel or the older Tin plated roofing? Thanks for your time.

Hi! Thanks for the questions. A roof which is referred to as being "aluminum" must be aluminum, which is an alloy. It should not be steel with a coating on it. Most aluminum roofs are painted for aesthetics. Most are from aluminum which was painted when it still was in coil form, before being formed into a roofing product. These are typically wet coats which are baked on. However, there is some powder coating being done on aluminum roofing as well. Galvanized steel roofing is available painted, aggregate-coated, or mill finish (bare). There is pretty much no way to visually tell a steel roof from an aluminum roof. A magnet is always helpful if you have access to the roofing panels. Todd Miller

We have a twin-rib aluminum roof. We are adding an addition to our home and want to locate matching roofing. The roofing was made by Kaiser Aluminum who is out of business now. Thanks for your help.

Thanks. I have responded direct to you via email. I believe that Fabral's Alu-Twin product will be a good match. Your roof looks very good in the picture. Like new in fact. I am guessing it is well over 20 years old though. Todd Miller

Thanks, I haven't received your email. My husband says it is at least 30 yrs old and may be older. Thanks again. Patsy

That's odd ... not sure why you didn't get my email. Fabral's Alu-Twin panel is available in mill finish aluminum with a diamond emboss. This will be a very very close match to your roof. Their website is www.fabral.com Your roof is a great testimony to the durability of aluminum roofing. Todd Miller

Patsy, I'm researching roofing systems. Your msg is inspiring. I saw somebody else's question about preventing damage from walking on metal roofs. Foam backing or under coating was suggested, but one of the benefits I've read about is air circulation between the metal ad sub-roofing. Do you have foam beneath your aluminum roof?
