I want to install a metal roof on my new cottage. What is the correct application. I have been told to install the rain and water shield along all eaves and valley's, then building paper over the balance of the plywood deck. I have been told that I must install 1x3 horizontal wood strapping over the building paper then install the metal roof panels on the 1x3 wood strapping. My question is this: is the wood strapping necessary or can the metal roof panels be installed directly on top of the building paper? Please reply, thank you

Bob, I cannot answer this because all answers are based upon exactly what type and whose metal roof you install. Some products must be installed over solid decking and some can and/or should be installed over battens. Building codes in many areas dictate ice and watershield over the perimeter. As far as the balance of the underlayment, you should us ewhat is suggested by the roofing manufacturer. 30-pound felt is not unusual though you may need a slip sheet on top of it. Frankly, if your metal roofing manufacturer cannot provide these details, then I feel you're working with someone of dubious quality and I would urge you to find another manufacturer.
