Both materials can make very good roof systems. Both are low weight and, based upon product design, installation methods, and coating, can be very energy efficient.
Steel is inherently stronger than aluminum but well-designed aluminum products make up for this with either thicker metal, more heavily formed products, or supporting backer boards behind the roofing.
Aluminum will not rust but today's steel systems include a variety of metallic and other coatings to help with rust resistance.
