I will be adding a garage and breezeway to the eve end of my 16 year old NH (snowy winters) house with an 8/12 (25 year) asphalt shingled roof. I would like to keep the breezeway roof pitch to a minimum to leave adequate clearance for a Velux roof window. Am I asking for problems by creating valleys that are half asphalt and half metal in snow country? If not, what is the minimum pitch I should consider for the breezeway roof? I would also like to add a farmer's porch to the gable end (no roof intersection). What would the minimum recommended pitch be for the porch roof? Please don't circulate my email address. Thank you, Jerry

Many of the residential metal roofing products require a 3:12 pitch. There are some products which can be used down to a 2:12. Below that, you will need to use a mechancially seamed standing seam. As far as the valley -- I have seen that done successfully before.
