TOPIC: Standing Seam roof

What is the proper method of constructing a standing seam metal roofing at the junction of slope change. The roof changes slope from 8/12 to 3/12 at one face. Can we simply bend the panel to form the changing slope or should we break the panels to 2 pieces and isntall a flashing/counter flashing system in between? Thanks

Stanley, Great question! Thank you. That is enough of a change that you do need to stop and re-start the panels with a pitch change flashing in between. The voids created where the flashing rests on top of the seams of the lower panels should be filled with a closure angle. Make sure that the pitch change flashing is not positioned in a way which creates a negative pitch across its surface.

Thanks for the prompt answer. Just wondering though.. what is the reason that the panel should be buit in 2 pieces rather than bending it? Is it because of the amount of slope change can add significant stress to the metal panel; hence, more oil canning? Or this is more of a water proofing issue? Thank you.

Really, both. The seams will be hard to make watertight and the bending will cause objectionable ripples in the panels. Todd Miller
