I am considering installing a metal roof on a beach house approx. 100 yards from the ocean. I'm being told I can only expect it to last for 10-12 years. Is this true?

This is not true. As an example, my comnpany specializes in the production of aluminum roofing products and we have many coastal applications of our products much older than the numers you stated which are still doing fine.
Different products have different corrosion resistance characteristics based upon the base metal, coatings, fastening, and even product design.
I suggest contacting the manufacturers of metal products you like and making inquiries concerning the warranty and applicability of their products for coastal applications. Ask for any references they might have of coastal applications.
