I am getting a new Metal roof and when I went onto Hy-Grade roofings site I see that they say they can put a new metal roof right over the old roof and when the fellow came out he said it was no problem to put their metal roof over 2 layers of old tar shingles and bottom layer of cedar shingles. What do the experts think about this??? I was in the attic and it is structurally sound and there is no rotten boards. The house was built in 1919 and the boards are true 1" boards that are from 5-8' wide. Any insight is greatly appreciated. Ron from Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Most building codes allow you to go over one layer but two is pushing it and with a layer of wood shingles underneath it is difficult to ensure the roof system gets attached to the structure properly. I know there is a cost ellement however you are preparing to put a permenant roof system on. As time goes on, the lumber gets more brittle and reducing the weight will add many extra years to the structure. Homes like yours were built so that the roof/attic breathed. Make sure the contractor installs balanced eaves and ridge ventilation to code.

Is it best to tear off the existing roof first before installing metal roofing? What additional venting and heat gain will I see with a metal roof. I live in Sacramento CA where it is hot in the summer 95-110 degrees. I understand that with an asphalt replacement roof their will be considerable heat gain in the attic. thanks Barry
