Hello: I'm researching the utilization of metal roofing in the tropics. I've seen some commercial buildings in Puerto Rico that have used it, but I'm more interested in using it for residential applications. Without further ado, these are my questions: 1. How is the metal roof attached to a concrete home? Do you have to use metal beams on top of the concrete roof to make gables? How would they be attached? 2. How metal roofing fares against hurricanes? How would they be attached to a concrete home to make them hurricane resitant? 3. How metal roofing fares in high humidity conditions? What about near the beach (high salt content in the air). How would they be protected? Regards, Luis Anaya

I am not overly familar with concrete construction but I will tell you what I know and perhaps some others will weigh in as well. There are specific steel fasteners made here in the US which their manufacturers say are compatible with concrete construction. Individual metal roofing manufacturers should be able to help you locate fasteners appropriate for their roof systems. Some metal roof systems require purlins for installation and others do not. Again, though, direct contact between you and the roofing manufacturer would be a good idea. Most metal roofs have passed the 90 psf UL 580 and UL 1897 uplift tests required by Dade County and other coastal areas. Today's metal roofs have a variety of good corrosion resistance measures taken. Look for roofing materials which meet the requirements of the Metal Construction Association certified roofing program.
