At some point in the future we will need to do something with our upper back roof. It is just under 2/12; roughly 14x32 area. There is a ridge vent currently in place. My question is what would be the most cost effective way to get a metal roof up there and the effect of same on the current ridge vent?

You will need to find a metal roof which is approved for a 2:12 pitch installation. Generally, this will be a vertical seam product that is mechanically seamed after installation. There may also be some "snap-lock" panels with sealant in the seams which can be used at this pitch.
I would suggest using a new ridge vent which should be available with the roofing.
