during recent hurricane a large tree fell on roof. There is now a hole in the metal roof. what should be done to protect home until roofing company can repair roof?

I would suggest tarping solidly over the damaged area from the ridge down. You can perhaps weight it down on the edges to hold it down or you may have to drive some fasteners through the surrounding roofing to secure it.
