R Panel vs Standing seam

Return to Product Selection

Return to Forum

I’m am having to replace my roof as a result of Hurricane Ida. My home had asphalt, but I am replacing with metal. Which would be better in the event of future hurricanes? R-panel or Standing seam? We’ve had several roofing contractors attempt to sell us on their products, and of course each one claims theirs is best. Now I’m looking for advice from experts who aren’t trying to force their products on me. Thank you in advance!

I am sorry for the storm damage. I will share my thoughts. One of the big differences between exposed fastener and concealed fastener products is that exposed fasteners do not have allowance for thermal movement. As a result, over time, the fasteners loosen and the fastener holes wallow out. In my opinion, an exposed fastener product will have better wind uplift resistance than standing seam when it's first installed but it loses that impact resistance over time. Long term, standing seam will be the better performer.
