wide metal valleys

I have a 5v metal roof on my house that has always been an issue in the valleys. I have very steep differing pitches meeting together and snow builds up in there, eventually ice dams form. I noticed that whoever did the firehouse in town, which is similar roof design had opened up the valley. I don't know what this is called, I have never seen it but was thinking it might work at my place. Have you seen this type of valley before? what is it called? valley.jpg

That is not anything I have ever seen before. It looks like they have done some sort of flat lock panel in the valley. If it's been done well, it probably isn't a bad way to go. Certainly a unique look as well. You could also use snow guards above the valley to help keep snow from converging as badly in the valleys. Also, make sure that your insulation and ventilation in the attic are as beefed up as possible.
