I have a 10 year old chicken house with a galvalum roof. I noticed that the nails on part of the house are rusting. Is there something I can do to prevent the rust from spreading to the roofing?

I'm installing a metal cover on some square tubing I have been told both ways to put the screws at the high part of the sheets and to put them in the valley where the sheet meets the tubing where should they go?

I assume you are using a cap screw with a rubber grommet. Most manufacturers suggest pre-drilling holes from the back side of the sheet so that the screws are then put into what are the tops (high spots) of the V's from the weather side of the roofing. If thge screws are placed in the valleys, the grommets will not seal properly.

I think it's very nice of you to have a house just for your ten-year-old chicken. Now, let's see if we can get that roof in order! Any chance of pulling the nails and replacing them with a quality screw intended for metal roof applications. Other than that, you could seal over the nails with a quality butyl sealant. However, there is a fair chance that they are actually rusting as the result of moisture and acid content in the chicken house.

I thank you, and my 10 year old chicken thanks you. I wonder how old that is in people years. It is about a 200' section of 28' roofing. Replacing the nails would be easier than replacing the roof, but I think I will try the sealant first. 1. Do you recommend a particular brand? 2. Should I do anything to the nail before I apply the sealant? 3. Am I just over reacting in the first place.

Hey Lamar, Actually, I am sort of wondering how long chickens live (if allowed to). Anyway, obviously, without seeing what's going on, I cannot say a whole lot but, right off hand, I would say that rusting nails will likely lead to leaks around the fasteners. Also, the rust can spread to the metal roofing itself. I would look for a terpolymer butyl rubber sealant. Brand probably doesn't make a big difference. Yes, the areas where you put the sealant should be clean and dry in order to get good adhesion. Todd Miller
