I love the look of a new look of a copper roof but don't want the eventual green tones. Do you know of any metal roofs that have the copper/brown colors of a copper roof? Also, we live in a very warm climate in Arizona. Will a dark color metal roof have any energy efficency?

Most steel and aluminum roofs with painted or granular finishes offer a variety of colors in the copper and brown range. Light color roofs have enhanced reflectivity. However, there are now special coatings available from some manufacturers which, even in dark colors, have good reflection of radiant heat. Check with your roofing manufacturer to see if they have coatings utilizing the new reflective pigment technology.

Will the aluminum roof (in a dark brown colour) fade in colour over time?

In this case, paint finish quality is the key. Recognized widely as the best paint finishes, including fade and chalk resistance, are Kynar 500 / Hylar 5000 finishes. Generally, in a dark brown, provided it is a Kynar / Hylar finish, you should expect 30 - 40 years of service before you really notice some substantial fade, even in a southern or high altitude. After about 50 years, it may be the point to where the owner will opt to repaint it, a fairly easy procedure. Todd Miller

Can you recommend a product brand that offers this type of finish on the aluminum - I have contacted a supplier in the area in which I live and he does not have any aluminum product with the finish that you are suggesting - As well, have you heard of an aluminum product that offers the look of weathered copper - I have seen a picture on the net of it, but it did not have a brand name associated with it. Your help would be appreciated as I'm really at a loss right now and am wrestling with the whole copper vs aluminum. Thanks.

My company manufactures two styles of aluminum shingles available in a multi-toned copper look. We have two such copper colors -- one is a bright and brown copper look and the other is a patina green look. One product is Oxford Shingle which can be seen on www.classicroof.com and the other is Country Manor Shake, viewable on www.perfectionusa.com Our Customer Support Specialist for Canada can be emailed at [email protected] Best Regards.
