Hello - I have a 5,000 sq ft metal building. I have insulated the entire building(walls and ceiling) with spray foam to be rated at R-14. I plan to build out a couple of large rooms inside of the warehouse but this build will be done in steps.
My first room will be 1,750 sq ft. The room will be fully sealed with metal framing and drywall. I want to roll out additional batt insulation in the walls and in the ceiling space to boost the r-value for that room; R-21 in the ceiling and R-9 in the walls.
So, I will have 3,250 sq ft insulated at R-14 and the 1,750 sq ft with additional insulation. Can I consider that 1,750 sq ft room to be rated at R-35 (R-14 + R-21) at the ceiling and R-23 (R-14+R-9) in the walls?
Yes, you can add the R Values is my understanding. The only time you can't is if one layer of insulation compresses another layer, lessening its effectiveness.
