I am considering getting a corrugated steel roof on my house, a one-story rancher. My current roof is asphalt singles and is 30-years old. I would like to go over the shingles and want to know whether to use 2 x 4 or 1 x 3 furring strips? Also, is an underpayment necessary if the shingles are still solid and are laying flat?

Thanks for thinking of a metal roof! I strongly suggest underlayment. I interpret building codes as requiring it even if the old shingles are left in place. Additionally, we do not want the abrasive old shingles rubbing against the back side of the metal. As far as fastening, not all metal roofs require or can be used with battens. If you need battens, the size should be specified by the roofing manufacturer,
