What is the safest way to walk on a steeply sloped metal roof?

There are a variety of things which can be done and they do vary somewhat based upon the exact profile of the metal roof being walked as well as upon exactly how steep the roof is. Most manufacturers can give advice on this subject particular to their products. However, first of all a soft rubber show sole is necessary, such as a tennis shoe. There are also some overshoes and shows with padded bottoms available today to help with roof access. Next of all, various styles of staging or equipment can be blocked up on the roof to assist with roof access. Ladders can be hung from the ridge and then supported up off of the roof deck with lumber and then ladder jacks and walkboards can be run between them. There area also various "float board" systems and other things which can be built and used. One of the best things about metal roofing is that roof access for maintenance should be very little. I live in a wooded area that requires frequent gutter cleaning that must be done from the roof. Is it ok to get up there 3-4 times a year?

There are ways to safely walk any metal roof. So, the answer to your question is "yes". You will need to talk to your installer and even the manufacturer perhaps to get details on how to walk the particular roof you choose, based upon your roof pitch, etc. Some of the formed "shingle-style" roofs also have foam inserts available which can be installed in heavy traffic areas if desired.

I'm reminded of a famous quote: Walk softly and carry a big stick... :)
