We have a large house with a good metal roof. We think the roof is about 15yrs old. The parts that are in full sun have faded and we plan to repaint.
We have had several contractos with paint suggestions:
Oil primer with latex metal paint finish (poli urathaine)
Oil based enamel.
Seal-Kreat Sealer with Kelly Moore 5780D.T.M Gloss
Enamel finish

One does need to know what type of paint system is on the roof so that the new coating is compatible. probably it is a polyester based paint. Best advice is to contact a local commercial painting contractor and get his advice. Typically the surface needs to be etched and powerwashed to cut the chaulking and then primed with a good metal primer followed by the finish coat. Choose one with good UV properties and remembsr the harder the paint the better it will resist abrasion.

Re message painting roof. The contactors we spoke to seem to think the roof finish is the original paint job from the factory. Paint reps have several opinions.
One says 'no oil' one says. Plastic primer to make sure
chalkings won't affect base paint. One says oil for
primer and final coat. These are commercial contractors as residential contractors didn't want to do it. Groan. Any more help from anyone would be
appreciated. Tom, Dick or Allen? thanks for input

I wish at times like these we had a paint expert helping us but unfortunately I believe their response would be limited in that there is not enough information available and we have just enough to get in trouble.
I would suggest you ask the contractors for referances, then choose the best and I would have a small piece of metal removed from a non critical are such as a trim piece and have them test their materials. It is not uncommon to have them sent the sample to their paint supplier and have them make the tests and recommendations.
