I recently purchased a 3 yearold home with an AEP-SPAN galvalume roof. One of the panels has a section with rust. I contacted ASC Profiles(the owner of AEP). They suggest using a zinc-rich cold galvanizing compound suitable for application on steel. I have found 2 products for this repair- Brite Products(Brite Zinc) and ZRC. Can you recommend one of the above or can you recommend another product? I appreciate your help. Dan Silver, 16 Jackson Hill Road, Sharon, CT 06069

Hi. We purchased a home built in 1986 with a metal roof. A few spots are showing some rust. We have been advised not to paint the roof. What should we do? Is it safe to just ignore the rust if it's minor? Thanks!

Most metal roofs can be repainted. However, the new paint will be more prone to fade and shalk. Is there any way you can send me photos? I'd be glad to give you a more in depth answer after I see them. Todd Miller [email protected]

Thanks for your reply Todd. I'll be happy to send you photos, but I won't be back at the house until sometime next week, so it'll be a little while. Steve

I have an 8 year old Galvalume standing seam roof. I am noticing some fine rust like streaking on the panels below a chimney. The rest of the panels are brite and new like. About three years ago I put a copper cap on the chimney. There is no direct contact, but could the copper washing off the cap be causing a reaction on the surface of the Galvalume?

Yes, the copper could be the culprit. Please feel free to email pictures to me. [email protected]
