TOPIC: Is A Metal Roof Right For My House

Metal Roof in high moisture area

We have a cottage in Haliburton, Ontario. Right now the asphalt shingles have lots of moss on them on one side of the cottage where there are many shade trees. Cutting down the trees is not an option -- many are on a neighbor's property.

I am assuming that our best bet would be to strip the shingles rather than install a metal roof over the shingles but is there another option that we should consider?

If there is enough vegetation and shade, moss will grow on nearly anything.

That said, metal does not change mass like an asphalt shingle does and will be much more resistant to moss growth.

I would look for a metal application that only uses a painted finish vs. a stone coated steel. The stone coated products will likely support moss growth more than a painted finish alone.
