We a considering putting a metal roof over a deck that does not currently have a roof. Can we expect the roofing contractor to know how to properly design this new roof (e.g., necessary supporting structure, proper slope)?

An experienced metal roofing contractor can probably work with all of these things. One key is to install the metal roofing according to its manufacturer's instructions. Check references on your contractor.

I plan to buy a light metal roof to be intalled over the driveway (8' by 30'). One side to be attached to the house, the other sits on posts. Can anybody advise me where to turn for the whole system(frame,posts,etc...)? I'm in New York city and appriciate the hint where I can get it here.

I do not know of any sources in the city. However, I would start by contacting a sheet metal shop or a steel framing contractor. Also, if you go to one of the large home cents or a large lumberyard, they might have some "kits" available for this.
