I have a 150 year old farm house in NE Ohio. I would like to replace the single slate roof with metal. There are two roof heights: (1) single story with attic space, (2) second story vaulted ceiling. The house has no insullation. What do you recommed?

First you must recognize that the older homes with no insulation or ait barrier for that matter, breathe like humans. Th slate roof allowed the moisture from escaping warm air condensating to dissipate. If you put any tight roof system on without providing additional ventilation then you will struggle especially with ice damming. I would take this opportunity to upgrade the insulation. In the attic area you can have soffit vent and ridge vents put in and have insulation blown in. Make sure you use a good underlayment. On the vaulted ceiling you can install ridgid insulation over the deck and ventilation can be provided by strapping the roof vertically and horizontally. Then install eaves and ridge vents and of course a good underlayment.
