Return to Installation

I have a 100+ year old outbuilding with a terrible roof currently. The building will not be used for anything valuable, probably housing chickens and some storage. My question is this: is it feasible for me to install a metal roof over the existing roof, leaks and all and expect it to be fairly watertight? Can I simply attach it to the existing joists? Most of the roof is there but there are a couple of holes.
Thanks. Some of your concerns may be more structural than roof related. I cannot comment on those of course. Exposed fastener metal roofing must be attached to some sort of support that runs horizontally, spaced as recommended by the manufacturer. Another option, of course, is to install it over something solid. I do not know enough about your current roof to say whether it would suffice.
