TOPIC: I Have An Existing Metal Roof and Have A Question

Excessive thermal expansion noise

I have a red vertical panel metal roof installed over a 24 ft. cathedral ceiling great room. It is our first summer in this newly built home. The thermal expansion noise is incredible. I have concerns that the movement will eventually loosen or wear around the fasteners and the racket is disturbing. We have notified the builder but I would like to be more knowledgeable about a solution. I am not someone who is sound phobic, heavy downpours on the roof are soothing. The creaking, loud popping and tool dropping noises however, are unnerving. The roof over the master bedroom and garage does not appear to be an issue. We are also in a high wind area. The roof was installed by the framing crew. How can I be sure that the roof was installed properly? I am enclosing a photo of the building. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest contacting the roofing manufacturer and asking for their input. Some sound is not surprising. I am curious ... what is beneath the roof as far as wood / lumber / framing? Todd Miller

The longer the panel run, the more noise as well. If the bedroom is a shorter panel, you will have less noise as well. Eric Novotny
