I have a question about a standing seam metal roof. If the himeowner does not want their existing shingle roof torn off & a new metal roof put on, what is best to use under the metal? 2×4s or ? & is this a ok way to install a standing seam roof? We have done exposed fastners roofs before, with furring strips over top of existing shingles, but just wondering if same application would be ok for a s.s. roof.

You can strap the roof with battens and go directly over the top. Insulation many or many not be even necessary if they have a ventilated attic currently. If they have an non-vented attic (i.e. hot roof), adding insulation or some sort of above deck vent space is an option worth considering.
