I have a question about a standing seam metal roof. If the himeowner does not want their existing shingle roof torn off & a new metal roof put on, what is best to use under the metal? 2×4s or ? & is this a ok way to install a standing seam roof? We have done exposed fastners roofs before, with furring strips over top of existing shingles, but just wondering if same application would be ok for a s.s. roof.

That is feasible with many standing seams but you really need to discuss it with the manufacturer and see what their product has been designed tested, and approved for. There are some standing seams that must be installed on solid decking only. And, I could be mistaken on this, but I believe most nail hem standing seams require solid decking. Todd Miller

You can strap the roof with battens and go directly over the top. Insulation many or many not be even necessary if they have a ventilated attic currently. If they have an non-vented attic (i.e. hot roof), adding insulation or some sort of above deck vent space is an option worth considering. Eric Novotny
