TOPIC: Energy Efficiency

attic ventilation

Return to Energy Efficiency

Return to Forum

I live in NW Iowa and had a steel roof installed in 2013. The roof is brown and it seems my attic is terrible hot during the summer. Should I have an attic fan installed? I do have 12 vents around the house on the soffits. It appears to me there are no other venting and I just want to avoid a problem if at all possible. The roof looks fantastic and we are very happy with it.

Thanks for buying a metal roof! Do you have intake vents, such as eave overhang vents? I would check to make sure you have a balance of intake and exhaust before adding a powered exhaust fan. Here's an article on ventilation that may be helpful as you think through this situation: https://www.classicmetalroofingsystems.com/blog/ventilation/ Todd Miller

Good read Todd. Ventilation does need to be balanced and sufficient. It sounds like you are lacking on both here, but some passive ventilation (intake and exhaust) will help strip off a bunch of that attic heat. Eric Novotny
