TOPIC: I Have An Existing Metal Roof and Have A Question

Galvanized Old Roof holes

I have an old barn roof that leaks around the nails and some small tears. I am only spot treating at this point, some of the metal is still in great shape despite its age. I don't want to invest a ton of money right now, so a new roof is not an option. I plan to replace the nails with the proper roof screws but would like to put caulk or sealant around the hole and the small tears. What is the best caulk or sealant to stand up to sun and wind. I don't want to tar the whole roof, I just want to fix the spotty leaks. Thanks, JH

I would suggest some sort of butyl sealant or a co-ether sealant. Clean the surface well before applying and apply only to a dry surface. Todd Miller

I am planning on wire brush the area and then wipe down and let dry. Do you have a specific brand of sealant that works the best for high heat? The roof gets very hot and the last time we tried a caulk sealant for roofs it melted. Thank You, JH

I am not sure what brands might be sold in your area. Nova seal. Chemlink. Geocel. Again, look for either a butyl or a co-ether sealant. If you wish, email me and I can sell you what you need. [email protected] Todd Miller
