Dear Sirs, I have an older home in central alabama where the temperature (especially in spring and fall) can swing 30-35 degrees in one day. The existing roof is a shingle roof with 2 layers of shingles. I am considering having a metal roof installed. Would it be acceptable to have the metal roofing installed on this existing roof without insulation ? Would the insulation provide enough energy savings over time to account for the $6k price difference in the quote provided by the contractor to go with insulation versus not going with insulation ? Thank you.

I assume you're talking about insulating on top of the current shingles? That would be possible with some metal roof systems. However, for you, its only benefit would be in the summer. Assuming you have an appropriately ventilated attic space, insulation on top of the current roof would not help with winter efficiency. Additionally, building up the roof in this manner would be a pretty time consuming thing. I would suggest the following: 1) Make sure you have good airflow ventilation through the attic. Preferable would be eave soffit vents for intake and a ridge vent for exhaust. This will help make sure that you do not get an unhealthy accumulation of moisture in the attic. It will also help keep the attic cooler in summer. 2) If you feel you need more efficiency, add insulation on top of your ceilings. 3) Choose a metal roof you like which is, according to its manufacturer, appropriate for your home. 4) Choose an experienced, quality installer. Depending upon the metal roof you choose and also building code requirements in your area, you may or may not have to have the existing shingles removed before the metal is installed. Todd Miller
