A contractor has offered to replace the shingle roof on our 15 unit condominium across the street from the beach (about 5000 sq ft roof three storys high) in Gulf Shores, AL. He is recommending metal shingles with cleats. I have seen the discussions that say "standing seam" metal roofs will meet UL 580 or UL 1897 or Dade County product control acceptance. But what about metal shingles? Will the individual shingles be more likely to blow off or allow infiltration of wind-blown rain than the standing seam sheet roof? Steve

Many metal shingle systems have passed UL 580 and UL 1897. You will just need to check with the manufacturer of the roofing for details. Also, because of your closeness to the coast, with any metal roof, check to see if there is any extra limitation on the product warranty. Todd Miller
