TOPIC: I Have An Existing Metal Roof and Have A Question

Walking on Roof

Return to I Have An Existing Metal Roof and Have A Question

Return to Forum

We bought a house that has an existing Alcoa aluminum roof. I don't have any information on style or model to help, but after reviewing your site, would say we have the metal shake. My question is what is the best way for someone to walk on the roofing material? We have to have the house painted and I'm concerned about the painter walking on the shingles when painting & prepping the 2nd story. Any tips/tricks or thoughts on the best method in which to proceed? I really don't want to have to replace my roof, which is in great condition, due to lack of understanding. Thanks in advance, this site has already proved very informative.

The Alcoa shake panels can be walked on the uphill halves of the panels, where they rest closest to the roof deck. Your panels may or may not have a foam backer for extra strength behind them. You can also place foam cushions or even boards on the roof and walk on those, in order to distribute the weight more evenly. Feel free to email me at [email protected] for more information. Hey Todd, Thanks for the info. What's the best way to know if there is foam underneath? Do I have to pull one up? I thought about the board usage, but wasn't sure if that would be enough. Thank you, Josh

If you can somehow peak under a panel someplace, you will likely tell if there is foam. Otherwise, when walking on the roof, you will be able tell. Foam does make a considerable difference. Todd Miller
