TOPIC: Installation

Installation recommendations

I am planning on installing a new metal roof this spring and would like to know what is recommended. I have talked to several contractors about the installation and have had different opinions on the subject. My roof is 20 plus years old with a double layer of shingles. The shingles are damaged and not laying flat. What would your recommendations be for the installation?

I am looking at applying the metal over the existing two layers of shingles. I need to know if underlayment and furring strips should be used in the installation. I am getting different opinions from the contractors.

If the shingles are not laying flat, the roof substrate should be leveled via the installation of battens, purlins, etc. Eric Novotny

Is felt or some type of vapor barrier recommended between the existing shingles and the metal panels?

What are the reasons for applying underlayment between the shingles and metal panels?

You should review the literature and requirements that are specific to the panel manufacturer, however, a slip layer is always required in some capacity. This is not to control vapor diffusion in this case and much more about protecting the back of the metal panel. Eric Novotny
