Applying metal roof directly to SIP OSB

I plan to build a Post & Beam Home using Structural Insulated Panels (SIP's) which are constructed from a sandwich of 7/16" OSB & 5, 5/8" foam. My Architect has said that the winters in a home in central NH will permit the metal roofing material to be installed directly onto the Felt paper covering the OSB. That a venting assembly on top of the OSB is not required. I plan to install an HRV system. Comments?

The new International Building Code calls for a minimum 1" vented airspace on all roof assemblies. Assuming you do not have a vented attic below the SIPs, this venting would have to occur on top of the SIPs. That said, if, through the use of a total vapor barrier and proper sealing between the SIPs, you can ensure that moisture from inside the house will not be able to migrate into the SIPs, you might "get by" without the added airspace. Please address this issue with your SIP manufacturer and get their response in writing. Todd Miller
