Sagging asphalt garage roof

Return to Product Selection

I have an existing garage with an asphalt roof. The middle of the garage is sagging slightly from the weight. Will a metal roof be less weight than asphalt? Is it best to strip the asphalt off first before installing a metal roof? Thanks!

Asphalt shingles weigh from 275 - 425 pounds per 100 square feet. Steel roofing weighs from 80 - 125 and aluminum from 50 - 70. Some metal roofs, especially the more heavily contoured or formed ones, can be installed over old shingles. However, the sagging you see now will still be visible. Todd Miller
