I am thinking of changing my composition roof to a metal roof. It has a 4/1 pitch and is not steep enough to slide the snow off. A friend told me last week he had a metal roof that snapped together instead of using metal screws. Is that a choice and if so what kind of roofing would it be, Sheets, tiles, or etc? Also to get a good slope for snow to slide off how much pitch should I go? Thank you Jim

There is no exact science to shedding snow. So much depends upon ambient temp, weather conditions and even home construction. However, as a metal roofing manufacturer, I receive very few comments about the snow not sliding off. I receive more about it being a bit noisy when it slides off -- in that case, snowguards can be used to help slow it down a bit. All of the MRA member manufacturers on this website produce some sort of concealed fastener roof system. With concealed fasteners, you have your choice of traditional vertical seam or shake, shingle, or slate profiles. Todd Miller

Thank you for the information. What slope should the new metal roof have. I currently have a 4-1? Is there a local distributer of the snap together metal roofing in our area? I live is Sterling, Alaska. Our nearest citys are Kenai, Soldotna and A150 miles from us is Anchorage. Is there a retailer in any of those areas? Jim

Most concealed fastener satnding seams will require a 3:12 pitch, meaning 3" of rise for every 12" of run. This website is sponsored by the Metal Roofing Alliance, a coalition of metal roofing manufacturers and our suppliers. There is a Find a Contractor section of this site which should lead you to some Alaska dealers and distributors. Other than that, you can contact the individual manufacturers directly and inquire with them individually.
