TOPIC: I Have An Existing Metal Roof and Have A Question

Paint/Finish Disappearing

Return to I Have An Existing Metal Roof and Have A Question

Return to Forum

Hi Forum: We have a 10 year old Classic Rib metal roof from a recognized national mfg. and the Forest Green paint has thinned out so much we can see some of the galvanized metal streaks shining in the sun, mostly on the raised edges of the ribs. There is some light rust starting in some of those areas also . No tree limbs have been on roof, not exposed to salt air and its got a high pitch. Any ideas on what may have caused this any suggested remedy ?

Without knowing what chemistry the coating is, it's hard to say. Have you had the manufacturer do an inspection for a possible warranty claim? Todd Miller

Its the "MS Colorfast 45 System" a Silicone Modified Polyester from AkzoNobel with combination of inorganic and ceramic pigments and superior resin is what their brochure states. I have requested an inspection from mfg. rep and hope to have that soon. Thanks, Bill

Can you recommend a test method that distinguishes between an epoxy-resin based coating and a PVF-resin based coating. Epoxy- coated products are sometimes sold as higher end PVF (PVDF) coatings and as a regulator (in Trinidad and Tobago), we need to distinguish between products.

here is what one of the paint manufacturer has to say about it. I am not sure it really helps you. Another way to get the information is to ask for certification from the coil coater that painted the metal. There is not a way to do the actual test in the field. A test can be done in the laboratory using a sample from the panel in question. The easiest way is to clip a sample from under a piece of trim. If this isn’t possible then a sample can be taken by scuffing the surface using some special “sample discs” and then analyzing the material caught on the disk. The discs resemble a small round (about 1” Dia.) sanding disc. After the sample is collected it’s sealed in an envelope and sent to the lab. The disc method can also be done on a panel under a piece of trim.
