Solar tubes in metal roofs

Return to Energy Efficiency

Return to Forum

I'm interested in reproofing with a metal roof and adding solar tubes to get additional light. Are there particular types of metal roofs and/or particular types of solar tubes (several different manufacturers, who call them by slightly different names) that would work better than other combinations? Should I have the roof installed first, and then add the solar tubes, or vice versa?

The solar tubes should be installed before or at the same time as the roof -- not after. I really do not have / know of a brand preference. I am attaching a photo of one flashing method. Todd Miller

I would recommend that they are installed at the same time. The flashing details are very important. Check with both the metal roof manufacturer and the solar tube manufacturer. Make sure that the water is diverted around the solar tube. if you need more help let us know. Dick Bus
