I have a 50 year old copper roof with Yankee Gutters. Can I apply a heat tape to the roof to help eliminate ice dams? Thank-you

Yes, that should be possible. You will also want to heat the gutters and downspouts.

be careful how you fastened the heat tape. Do not nail or screw it. Rather it should be clamped to the seams. You may want to look at the cause of the ice dams. It can usually caused by heat loss which is the result of under insulated attic space. Proper ventilation will also help in reducing ice damming.

+1 Please look critically at the ventilation as well as air sealing and insulation.
