TOPIC: I Have An Existing Metal Roof and Have A Question

Metal roof replacement

Return to I Have An Existing Metal Roof and Have A Question

I am having a new metal roof installed over existing 30 year shingles which have been in place for only 6 years. But due to poor quality workmanship they need to be replaced. My new contractor should I use him, suggested installing 30 pound felt over the existing shingles instead of using 1x4. Is this a workable and practical issue. Please let me know, we need to get started. thank you ben pacheco [email protected]

Ben, this would not be unusual for many metal roofs. If you use 30 pound rather than a non asphaltic synthetic, it may be good to use a slip sheet on top of the felt. Always adhere to roofing manufacturer specifications. Todd Miller

Ben, You need to check the metal manufacturer for final approval but it is likely that it is. As Todd said, with felt, an additional slip sheet is recommended. Given your location, the 1x4 would help (if done in both directions) with some above deck venting and cooling as well. Eric Novotny
