I am installing a metal roof over existing shingles, one layer and good decking. I was planning to use the fir strip method as I have family members who have done this and have great results. I was advised by a roofer that insurance requires the installation to be flat on the roof, whether over straight decking or over shingles and without purlins or stripping. I have never heard of this. You probably should check with your insurance company but, no, I have not run into that.
