Why is it necessary to use pipe boots on a metal roof? It would seem that a good coating of silicone caulking would suffice. Thanks

In my experience, caulking is not suitable for several reasons. For one thing, it tends to sag and fall into voids over time, tearing. Additionally, silicones do not adhere well to many of the paint finishes being used today. A well flashed pipe boot is a far more failsafe and lasting way to go. Todd Miller
