snow buildup on roof

I have a new metal roof I like very much. Now I have snow that is accumulating, melting, freezing and hanging over my new gutters. Contractor willing to come back and install snow bars. What can you recommend? This is a smaller, single story home.

Snow retention devices are an option butit sounds like you have problems with ice and ice usually occurs because of inadequate attic ventilation and/or insulation. Basically heat from inside your home is reaching the attic and creating hot spots on the roof deck where it melts the snow. That melted water runs down the roof until it hits the overhangs which are not over a heated area and it re-freezes there as ice. Snow retention devices are used more to keep snow from sliding off the roof, blocking doorways, hitting shrubbery, etc. Todd Miller

+1 Regardless of the roof, ice damming (and all the damage that comes with it) will happen if you have poor ventilation and insulation/air sealing in the attic. Call and energy auditor or someone specializing in energy that can properly diagnose and retrofit the attic assembly for optimum performance. Eric Novotny

Historically metal roofing have less tendency to back up water as shown in the 1+ post.
