Re-Roofing an old barn - Shingles to Steel

Return to Installation

Return to Forum

Hello I am looking for some advice, I am in the process of re-roofing my barn (60 -70 year old barn). It has/had 3 in 1 shingles with felt paper and tounge & grove boards. I am thinking about leaving the tounge and grove boards and running perlins over the top of them to take out the "small waves" that have formed within the roof over the last 30 years. Would I need felt paper under the perlins? Thanks Shane

Shane, I would suggest some sort of underlayment such as 30 pound felt paper ... or a synthetic underlayment. Todd Miller

Yes. You will need some sort of underlayment behind the purlins. Personally, I prefer the synthetics that Todd mentioned. Eric Novotny
