TOPIC: I Have An Existing Metal Roof and Have A Question

Insulating a metal roof

Return to I Have An Existing Metal Roof and Have A Question

I'm finishing a deck attached to the back of house and making it into a living room/ sun room, the room will be climate controlled. The roof is a shed type metal roof with furring stripes over 2x8 pressure treated joist. My main concern is condensate from temperature change dripping down onto my new finished ceiling. How can I insulate the ceiling and what products are available for my type of situation. Thank You
Sam Morris

I would suggest closed cell urethane foam to be sprayed on. You need something that blocks water vapor and controls heat. Todd Miller

+1 cc SPF is your best one step solution in this case. I prefer (if it were my home) to install rigid foam inside the rafter bays first (foil faced iso works well with the foil facing the roof with a small gap, and then spray the SPF over the foam. If the roof ever requires servicing, you can do it without destroying the spray foam. If you run the foil faced iso, you can run with open cell foam at that point. Just make sure the drywall is sealed up well on the ceiling surface and you have no air leaks. Eric Novotny
