Metal Roof over Wood Shake Shingles

Return to Installation

Return to Forum

We have wood shake shingles that are being to show their age and want to put on a metal roof. Do the shingles need to come off or can metal be put on top. Also, what do we need to worry about for a metal roof in WY?

Many of the metal shingles (in shake, tile, shingle, etc. profiles) can be installed over wood shakes up to maybe 1" or so thick. Some metal systems would also allow battens over the old wood roof followed by the new metal roof. I would suggest using this site to find a few products you like and then inquiring with their manufacturers. Any existing roof leaks or weaknesses should always be addressed before new roof installation. If you wish, email me photos of your current roof and I will try to provide additional input. As Todd said, many can be installed over the existing roof whether wood, asphalt, etc. I, as a general rule, prefer to put down over a bare deck. No issues with metal as long as it is used properly in Wyoming. Beautiful part of the country out there. Eric Novotny
